I get how paying your own rent can feel good. Like a sense of accomplishment. When I paid rent for my first apartment outside of college from my own paycheck without any assistance from my parents, I finally felt "Ahh, I'm truly an adult."

Now though, if I could get away with not paying rent I would 100% skip.

Why didn't the Guardian Fox tell them who to pay rent to when Sohei was in charge, or take care of the rent herself?

Why? it obviously wasn't exactly missed.
We didn't know that until now. Nowhere in Nobu was rent even a topic, so it was under the impression that the Foxes were magically taking care of everything and all that Nobu/Gen had to do was serve food and give the Foxes their pay in meals.

Hell, both locations were magically forced to take their otherworldly change to a conveniently nearby shady pawn shop run by the Foxes in disguise. The Foxes could have just as easily used the money from their to pay the rent for Nobu/Gen.

It's a different situation, but I know an old couple. They have a big house, and all their kids move out. They let students rent pretty cheap. Some still can't pay. The old couple just lets it off. I think they don't really need money, but just some people around them.

I was always under the impression that Nobu didn't need to pay rent, else somebody would have come to them and ask for it, given how famous they must be due to their popularity among commoners and gourmands.

It's honestly interesting how much Gen integrates with the world as opposed to Nobu. Like sure Nobu has hired staff, but there's not really much coming and going and so it feels very much like a home game, but with Gen everything constantly feels new and novel.

I wish landlords irl were like this smh. Thanks for the TL
There are cases where the landlord is easy to deal with, the real pain in the neck is the hired real estate agency that sets a price without any criteria and sometimes without the consent of both parties.
