I'm glad I was eating a pork belly sandwich when I read this.

Eating delicious food to develop your palate is a must for anybody who wants to continuing developing as a cook. Ono Jiro talks about this briefly in the documentary Jiro Dreams of Sushi.

Shame about the BLOODY FOOD PRICES THEN!!:shamihuh: 400 grams of chicken is almost ten dollars over here! I used to get that for 7 a decade ago! Bacon was 3 dollars for a pack of 120g, real quality THICKLY SLICED portion. Now it's 6 dollars!

For this, I'm glad I now work at a grocer—and not a restaurant, because that only helps out with one meal per shift—and can purchase reduced-priced meat. I just bought 5x 1lbs rolls of pork sausage at $1.71 each, and I get chicken thighs when its $1.29 per pound.

At some point, society should just go full cyberpunk and embrace soy-, krill- and fungal-based proteins to reduce prices.

Nice little snack chapter, perfect with a mug of coffee and a piece of "grummelkes vlaai" or crumble pie (local delicacy of the Dutch and Belgian provinces Limburg)

I do believe American grocers call that type of pie top a "Dutch crust". Is the filling custard? Lemon curd?

Move to Canada, BC specifically :V

The local grocery stores can have thick-cut bacon as low as $1.49CAD/500g package. Fresh meat is a bit pricier, but the store has a special where you can mix'n'match any 3 packages for $20CAD, so if you keep an eye out you can usually snag 1.5-2kg of fresh chicken/pork/beef for $20CAD+tax.

Just don't ask about the housing prices.
