So what is that idiot king going to do when he murders the whole village and he is left with no one to take care of the land or pay his stupid taxes? Why are nobles or royals in isekai stories always so stupidly evil?

The nobles dont need the extra taxation. in most cases they either want to amass their wealth more, are way too paranoid and invest a ton into military, or are just constantly playing around and dont want to stop.

@acolytus It’s not like his entire kingdom is made up of that one village. It is a common sence to punish those who betrayed their home-country.
Also, the example of the village being completely destroyed would most likely stop other villages from trying

#CollOtamegane A deserter is a soldier who's pledged loyalty to a cause and then abandons his post. I don't think that people who happened to be born in this king's domain are quite the same.

Based on this we can assume those villagers didn't have the right to move elsewhere freely. They might not have been serfs, but there must have been such a restriction nonetheless. In a medieval or earlier society it would be nothing out of ordinary. Human rights is a rather modern idea.

@TUSF I understand the idea of making "an example" out of someone and I also understand that if you murder an entire village, then you will be left with no one to take care of that land and lose way more money.

If he really wanted to make an example out of them then maybe he should have only killed a few so that the rest live to tell the tale and never forget the punishment for trying to run away.

Even then, since the problem is that they can't pay the king's stupid taxes, killing them won't solve anything. If people know they can't pay the taxes and they can't escape either, then it's more likely they will feel cornered and do something desperate since their options are pretty much dying of hunger due to being poor or being killed.

So congratulations, King Fuckup, due to your lack of understanding how to rule your own kingdom, you just forced your own people to start a rebellion or to help a foreign power invade your lands with the hope that its rule will be less tyrannical.

I'm actually interested in why the tax is so high in the first place.
From what we know:
1) The kingdom went through a resign change(or something) recently and alot of voodoo magicians were killed.
2) The king used to be kind.
3) The king is desperately taxing the citizens and should know the citizens are having trouble paying.
4) The soldiers are barley making ends meet, although that is better than the villagers.
5) The villagers and soldiers were not on the brink of starvation.
6) We have heard no news of forced conscription, recruitment offers, ect.
7) The soldiers were friendly to merchants but wary of suspicious individuals.

So it is not farming or crop related as it would likely result in famine/food shortage. The military is not being paid excessively or seemingly expanding as the base soldier is paid the minimum and we havn't heard any recruitment offers.

Either this is a king that has gone senile and lost his mind, this is a result of corruption of a greedy noble or faction of nobles, or the king is being used as some sort of puppet and is not being properly informed of his kingdom and it's standing.
Prediction: The result will be that the MC wins the battles and resolves whatever issue that is causing it. An alliance/ treaty may be made as a result. He will gain fame, military prowess, and definitely honorary peerage. The griffin may step in at the last moment and be deciding factor when things look grim.

@CraniumAmbiguity
Quite heavy spoiles bellow, maybe... I'll try to not say too much
If I'm not remembering it wrong, the guy being kind before not having changed now its because hehas the same power as the MC, and it's side effects changed him.
The famine is one thing, but what came after has the same roots as he changing

@Acolytus or he can kill all the people who he sees as traitors, set an example to all the other villages and have the lord who rules over that village get other people to work the land
