I dunno how old you are but I was a kid back volunteering at group homes for kids with disabilities before "mental retardation" was replaced with the new terminology. So I know my history of the terms.

If you are saying deriving a word from another word is crafting then I think you need to look up the definition of crafting. Mental Retardation has the connotation of being negative and just using that as an insult is not crafting a word to attack someone.
