In this case it isnt attacking. Its pulling the trigger of a stationery crossbow. Similar to pulling a lever which is connected to the firing mechaism of a stationery crossbow.
Which means he has to find the one crossbow that aims exactly at the right angle, and activate that one. That's a considerably high skill check, but it's been shown as more reliable than not by hitting twice in a row.

It might also be judged as a DEX save rather an an attack against AC, but that's less important.

it does help that he triggered the crossbows that are firing from the back.
its harder to dodge if you cant see the arrow coming right at you.
The downside though is that there does not seem to have a reload mechanism so it only works once per crossbow.

Not sure about Pathfinder or whatever system this is, but D&D 5e doesn't actually make a distinction for facing. Traps don't have different DCs for whether you're facing them. This system might be different, though.

I don't think a Mage Hand could provide the power necessary to reload a crossbow anyway, even with whatever's the appropriate mechanism.

I don't know the rules of using scrolls, but he used a scroll, not a spell slot.
It differs slightly between systems, but in DnD 5e, you can only cast spells from scrolls if they're on your class spell list, and if they're higher level than you can normally cast, you also need an ability check.

The system here is some kind of homebrew, though, since it doesn't exactly match up against any specific system (though I use DnD 5e as a comparison, since it's close).

My problem with this one was that Haste was listed as a level 2 spells, which would be wrong either as a spell slot or as a scroll.
