How is that dumb writing exactly? The MC is a King every action he takes has consequences and he and people have just arrived in this world he couldn't go and kill off people willy nilly, He could have brought on an all out war to his kingdom had he just up and end that man. He wasn't being naive he was being cautious by going"hey let's not go killing people just before we know what's going on", and yes it cost these people lives but the same could have been said had he just killed that man outright people would have come looking for him most likely and things would have escalated into something much worse.
