@captain_crunch @Wolvenworks The (second round of) bad rumors were the trade he made to not have to fight that old hunter. The point was to make the state of the city not seem as good as it actually was, to keep the royal family from seizing control out of worry that the city was well off enough to be a threat. Which is a bunch of contrived crap, but them's the breaks.

The original bad rumors were probably just a result of how rumors spread like a game of Telephone. Changes each time in the retelling until important details are lost, all he ended up with reaching the nearby towns around that first one was that he destroyed the inn and beat up some poor adventurer while ripping off the merchant guild. I assume building on top of that was the old man's plan to make him sound like a disaster that rolled through their area too and messed things up before going on his merry way.

"MONEY IS EVERYTHING IN THIS WORLD TOO!"
Oh, that explains everything. The MC is a socialist. I hope he figures shit out before he gets anyone else killed.

And seriously, why would he refuse to sell simple tech like sleeping bags and tents? This is as stupid as the Prime Directive.

@overlordvulcan he's afraid of his temper. Bu constantly hearing what a shitty person he is, the MC forces himself to consider the impression he gives off rather than letting his temper get the better of him.

Its a stupid solution to his problem, and one that doesn't really do much to solve the issue. And of course, the drawbacks are fucking HIDEOUS.

This is the rather problem with self-regulated rules.

"Okay, I need an excuse to break my current principles right now. Oh, good, here's a few. Let's go!"

Like normally this is a problem with diets and whatnot instead of whether you're going to go engage armies of ogres in bloody battle, but, y'know, same principle.
