I didn't get the sense that the princess was super excited for the war either, so I feel like there's a little something else going on here; perhaps the demons were masquerading as each other and demanding unreasonable things from each other, to break relations between allied nations?

Go back to chapter 3. There was literally one page in an earlier chapter where the princess cheerfully said "I can't wait for the war to start", and even her old minister looks confused.

Yeah someone else had linked it. Funny how I had completely forgotten that, but remembered her appearing to show concern for the MC's welfare as he was leaving (but still giving him the right to do so). Stupid selective memories!
