The only reason this is welcome news to me is that the anime was a much better experience (and why I started reading the manga to begin with). They couldn't get away with the lazy presentation in anime form, so they actually had the characters interact more and look alive.

The first is indeed about being homeless and starving, these are war refugees.
The second is just the level of 'luxury' to the meal, they are mostly peasants so this sort of feast would be something they rarely get to experience not to mention they are newcomers who hasn't really shown any value to receive such favorable treatment from their view.
