He has lost contact with the spirits of that world too ( episode 1 he had no magic), so probably he is borrowing the Japanbahamal spirit powers using the old world powers. Remember everything is according to his memory and what he brought along.

He said her clothes ripped not because of him, but because of her own body and curves. Considering her clothes used to fit her perfectly before, weight gain is a reasonable interpretation. Calling her a "lardass" is just an exaggeration though.
