Come to think about it, MC's parents died when he was a child, while Io's Dad seemed to disappear to Earth fairly recently. No way MC is related to Io unless something convoluted happened behind the scenes.

I can think of a lot of ways it could happen. From full siblings, to half and step. Since my theory is all based on how much MC and Io look alike, step is pretty much out, but still possible. Anything further would depend whether MC's parents actually died. They both could have gone to the other world, had their daughter, and dad sent back to Earth on a mission. Dad could have died, mom dipped out with grandpa telling MC she died, and she meets a man on the other world, again leading Io and the same mission for this dad instead of MC's. For step-sibs, same scenario, only the new man already had a young daughter. The commander seems batshit crazy enough to make use of any of these scenarios to mess with them, but it all does depend on whether she is MC's mother too.
