@WhimsiCat Yes, because he turned it off, his mentality changed and he couldn't anymore even pretend to ignore possible danger in combat. It also means he would need to evaluate the upcoming fight and his own chances in it. If you have godmode on, you can even try to fight a dragon and only give up when you realise your cause less damage than the dragon regenerates.
We don't know he didn't realise the swarm seems small enough to handle. He doesn't need to know it's smaller than normal if it's smaller. What difference would it make? He fights the swarm in front of him, not a theoretical swarm. We also don't know if he could have escaped if needed. All we do know is that he didn't suffer major damage, aside from losing his sword, but gained a whole bunch of experience. He's an adventurer, it's his choice to live like an adventurer. Some have no ambition or courage and kill rats in cellars all their life, some think big and end up slaying minotaurs and manticores.
