It also means he would need to evaluate the upcoming fight and his own chances in it. If you have godmode on, you can even try to fight a dragon and only give up when you realise your cause less damage than the dragon regenerates.

We don't know he didn't realise the swarm seems small enough to handle. He doesn't need to know it's smaller than normal if it's smaller. What difference would it make? He fights the swarm in front of him, not a theoretical swarm. We also don't know if he could have escaped if needed. All we do know is that he didn't suffer major damage, aside from losing his sword, but gained a whole bunch of experience. He's an adventurer, it's his choice to live like an adventurer. Some have no ambition or courage and kill rats in cellars all their life, some think big and end up slaying minotaurs and manticores.

The 'training' you mentioned were just sword training and the basic cooperation outing, nothing is mentioned about learning monsters characteristic, especially an event that only appears once every couple decades.

@Kaarme: It does not matter if he knew the swarm was abnormal in size, the point was that he still took an action that's very reckless of him, even before the swarm part his reaction upon facing the first group of ants wasn't to retreat/regroup but to lure the monsters away.

Check this out. The beginners' course, that training arc I mentioned, is intended to make sure they don't die while questing by teaching "the basic skills, knowledge and education" they need. If there was no behind-the-scenes classes, then the guild already failed their job by intentionally lying to their applicants. If there was behind-the-scenes classes, then they failed by not mentioning something extremely dangerous that was about to happen. If the ant swarms are so predictable that they can even tell how often they occur, then they had to have known one was due soon and should have made sure the new explorers knew to look out for it. Either way, the guild failed Jin.

Page 12 might just be the worst page of manga I have ever had to lay eyes on. That's the kind of drawing I would do as a child based on my Yugioh cards.

I usually respect bad artists (gun-ota) more than lazy artists (nonbiri nouka). But even that has its limits and this artist is really pushing it. This is almost as bad as Jaryuu Tensei. Page 12 really is something special though...

@WhimsiCat You first need to know what you are personally capable of. Only then you can efficiently work in a tight-knit group, like those of adventurers. At least when we are talking about fight. Anyone can join a group to gather herbs, as long as they can recognise the desired herbs.

@Marj_Licht you might want to open your eyes before blaming others. In the last chapter in the very end he says Thank you and you can see that the damage reduction is gone from his status.


Rant:
The whole situation was idiotic anyway, with his scan abilities he knew more ants are coming and the very first one would have already mortally wounded him so better turn off the damage reduction right there to really feel alive for 5 minutes tops until he gets eaten by ants.

But of course he immediately becomes ten times stronger better and faster than before -_-
