@mrmm Well yeah they are mostly use for defense and fortification, we associate trench warfare with WWI due to how it was widespread and the casualties during that war.

Why I have a feeling that this story will collect the entire beneficial half of "what if"s in the world for this battle.. and forget all inconvenient "what if"s.. spice that up with "what if everything inconvenient was actually according to keikaku" and this entire arc becomes a lot more disinteresting.

Now that they opened a hole through the barbed wire, the Haurelians can funnel in. If the Antrim guys somehow take care of the magicians to take away their counter against ranged units, rearm most of their troops with ranged weapons, move them to the still-covered flanks, while the rest lock down the gap in the barbed wire with melee, then this will indeed turn into massacre that's slightly parallel (tho not the same odds) with another historical battle: the battle of Agincourt

If I remember correctly, the English faced the French who were numerically-superior in every way (overall, cavalry, infantry, etc.). So they set up stakes on their flanks but not center, with their archers in the flanks and melee in center. Most of their army were archers at this point. The difference is that in this battle, the field was also muddy, which bogged down the advancing French and made them easy pickings for archers. Thus, the French funneled in, bogged down and tired from walking over mud in their armour, while the English rained arrows on them.

LN Volume 5. Chapter 1 covers manga #57-60
Manga #63 = Vol. 5, Chp. 2, Part 4

Things manga glosses over that you might miss from this volume if you skip directly to this section:
* The floodgate builder's competition was Samurai & Otaku's ideas. Sanai had experience where regular rewards/bonuses were well received and Masaharu read about a military campaign to group soldiers by birthplace increased production, solidarity and rivalry among groups. (In case you're wondering what they've been doing.)
* Randolph was ordered to help Antrim by heading south in secret.
* Antrim's 800 footsoldiers are about 100 veterans & regularly positioned soldiers, 350 hired soldiers from neighboring regions & 350 volunteers from within the region. And they've got unusually high morale, feeling firsthand the growth and opportunities an economically booming Antrim can provide. The remaining units are magicians, knights, mercenaries and miscellaneous troops.
* The enemy mage fireballs are only straight shots, making trenches more effective.
* "It's our Victory" Borodino has a personal stake in this attack. His father was a highly respected general on track to reaching the highest military position in Haurelia, but was unfortunately assigned to attack Cornelius in the previous war. To try to avoid massive losses, General Dampierre sent an assassin to kill Silver Light Margot & Ignis. They failed and Dampierre was killed in their crushing defeat. The general's tactics were used by his rivals to slander and diminish House Dampierre's influence. Borodino hopes to avenge his father and begin rising in the ranks with a victory in Antrim.
Major spoiler for next chapter.
Are you sure you want to continue?
...cylinder shaped flame flew out with fierce momentum from the tip of a thick nozzle.
The flamethrower’s only weakness was its short range, but it was enough to strike Haurelia soldiers that were rushing to Antrim encampment.
「GYAAAAAAAAAAAA!」
Dozens of soldiers were immediately enveloped in flame. They were turned into torch alive.
However the merciless flame wasn’t satisfied yet by that victim. It also headed toward the magicians behind the infantries who were shielding them.
「HIIIIIIIIH! Cancel! Magic Cancel!」
「No, no good! It won’t vanish……!」
「Why!? There is no way something like this isn’t magic……!」
That sight was like a nightmare.
The flame was sticky and spreading further. No matter how much the victim rolled around on the ground, no matter how hard their comrades hit them with mantel, the flame showed no sign of vanishing at all.
The flame’s temperature was higher than normal flame. Each time it spread to other person, it would undoubtedly lead that person to death.
「Water Ball!」
There were magicians who instantly tried to extinguish the flame with magic, but the moment the water touched the flame, it was like the flame was licking the surface of the water and spread further, turning the caster into a pillar of flame too.

@hansy089 its one thing to capture and not kill soldiers, but setting traps and wiping them out isnt bad. If someone is invading your country they dont have much right to complain in how you defend it.
