the merchant is just dumb, not only did he destroy his own wagon and supplies costing him money but he also tried to commit mass murder against the village and left all his guards behind leaving him completely powerless against enemies. how did this guy manage to become such a big time merchant being this dumb?

Sora, don't go saving that pos, pls! I know you'll probably still go, but maaaan.... someone spoil me

i do believe if they're trying to retcon this with the how the WN play out

somehow enrique is safe but they will turn how this even play out as the adventurer neglected their job and tried to arrest the adventurer, until yoru played her card and use reverse uno as the daughter of the cardinal, which she will call one of the church staff to clarify and interrogate the merchant, therefore enrique and the merchant group got totally wrecked using the combo of yoru and mc negotiation skill

Sigh.... he's the typical greedy dumbass, the kind that'll do everything he can thinking he'll benefit from his actions but in fact screw himself over. It just depends on how severely he screwed himself in the situation. Which I hope karma bites his head off the bastard

My assumption is he only borrow the big name of the company cz of his connection or inside person, cz it didnt make sense a merchant that caliber doing something that didnt make sense...

He threw horse shit on their food, that's an almost impressive level of pettiness.

Yeah, I'm at the point that I'm questioning how he's managed to walk and breathe at the same time.

Well, I highly doubt that the old merchant will die, chances are that in typical Japanese Sonen manga fashion he will be saved by the MC and the rest.
Afterwards if the Mangaka follows the average Japanese storytelling then the Merchant will either accuse the MC and the rest of the people of colluding with the monsters, or threaten them in order to stop them from revealing what he did, using his company's backing/power for intimidation, only for him to be put in his place when the rich girl from Bloody Rose is revealed to be some kind of royalty (or at least part of a high ranking noble family like that of a duke).

This is just a guess btw I've never read the WN.

Well from what I can gather he never had to face such a predicament, being a successful merchant (especially with the backing of a large trade company) can simply rely in being able to get good info on the current market, heck for all we know high success might be the results on blindly following his higher ups direction (AKA go to place A buy spice B and sell it to city C and fast).
So all this old man could be capable of is just following orders and using whatever means possible(no matter how ruthless) to achieve them. And also being good at trading ≠ being good at organizing security and assessing a threat.
