A subordinate's achievements may not directly be their "commander's" achievement, but it still makes the leader look good since they were technically in charge. Everyone was ready to run for it, but fatty told them to fight and they won. If not for what clearly went wrong but wasn't shown yet, you could argue that he made the right call since obviously their territory is better off without that thing in it. Even if the reality is that he lucked out while trying to throw as many bodies as it took at something they really should have retreated from so they could handle it properly later.
