in most of places west of Ural the classes tend to not change much, so if you've begun your school in class A you're gonna graduate from class A too, unless you pull off some real shitshow
apparently in japan classes get shuffled around each year, so both the time frame you have to knit relations is narrow, but also you know about the deal beforehand, so some people don't bother with anyone they do not find amiable/interesting

@breizh it Japan tradition, to switch classes every year, it's like gamble - you never know, will you be in the same class next year. They believe that this is good way to prepare children's for adult life, help them socialize better in new environment. But as you regularly see in manga - it has the opposite effect - people dont even bother to learn names of the classmates bcs "oh, next year they wouldn't be around anyway, so why even try to make friends lol". And bcs of that there is a lot kind of situation in manga like fear, that you gonna be transferred from you class, where you made friends or even find yourself love, and then you lose the connection with them etc. Never notice this? It's always around in the school life type of manga.

Wait, it isnt normal to not have the same people in homeroom every year? People on here are acting like it is a foreign concept. All up until 11th or 12th grade we had basically random classes and then we went alphabetical. It isnt some Japanese tradition steeped in meaning. Though my graduating class had 700 people in it and every class there was around 30 people, I only really knew who was around me since we probably didnt share any classes apart from Homeroom
