I thought the dumb theory would be that J can only switch bodies if the name of the other body's original owner starts with M (meaning body swaps are one-way)

Honestly, I don't think that's a terrible theory. Knowing what we know now it's likely debunked. But hell I'd be inclined to believe it otherwise since we already have Megumi and  Maria so far.

So far, I would say, out of all body switching attempts worked only two in which Megumi's body accidentally flipped backwards and both bodies were conscious. The failed one was when J performed rather brutal intentional front headbutt on sleeping Megumi 😅 maybe contingency is the missing factor?

Then this somehow becomes common knowledge, and the story switches genre. Like to a body snatcher horror story or something.
In fact that could've already happened if Marie's body had sustained a life-threatening injury.
