while I do agree, they do use "kare" and "kanojo" as terms to refer someone by gender but that's situational tbh. And MC doesn't know their genders because:

1) They have more boyish look when they were young. Dress like a boy would usually and acts like a boy than being girlish.

2) They kept using pronouns more associated with boys/men. Akira was an Orekko, Kanae was a Boku girl, and Shigure... I've never seen her refer to herself other than watashi. Maybe on the later chapters. Shigure's quite the introverted character aside from thirsting hard for MC... sexually.
