Huh? Isn’t one of them a trans woman? Or is this just a case of japan being japan and she has internalised transphobia or something
It's a bit iffy in this case. Tarou has already said she's not planning on getting bottom surgery and that's a requirement in Japan, along with sterilization, in order to be recognized on legal documents as a woman.

Anywho, the quartet are doing the best they can to reassure Aki in that body image struggles are varied and valid, and they both empathize and sympathize with him in his issues.

noooo, Rina! It’s ok to break the flow of conversation a little, occasionally. Correct the misunderstanding…. “I’ll explain later” is fine as a follow up!

It’s probably the sex vs gender idea?
Also, she’s legally male, at least (it’s why she had to use that changing room at the pool 🤢).

Yeah, that stuff…
Still very cringe and nauseous.

Rina could also just be comfortable with being "male" as a way of meaning "AMAB" or "biologically male" or one of those such things, while definitely not being a man. As a transgender woman I basically feel that way, I would be okay being lumped in as "male" in a circumstance like this. I know a lot of others (probably most?) aren't comfortable with that, but it's not universal.

And Lemon being the one to say that makes he think he's using a term which he knows won't put Rina out, but also doesn't out her so she can explain that on her own terms. (Even though he kinda sorta already outed her, because this is still Lemon we're talking about.) And while it may be weird for the 'coming out' to be "I'm actually trans, not a crossdresser" instead of "I'm trans, not a cis woman" it seems like Rina's fine with that framing. Honestly I can understand the caution to not fully explain to a stranger what her deal is; he could be into crossdressing but not be okay with being transgender, y'know?

But this is pretty purely an analysis of the text as translated, since I don't know Japanese at all to guess at the original or what terminology divides may have been in play.

I mean, you can still be a woman even if the government disagrees lol

”Man” is a more literal translation, but what would be “male” in a literal isn’t something you’d say in this context, unfortunately.

I think it’s genuinely a more “now’s not the time” thing.

Yeah, but social pressures are more intense and gender identity issues are less widely known.
Haruna Ai was a huge help with that 20 years back, and things have advanced since, but it’s still gonna be seen as splitting hairs without it being a whole conversation, and she’s had her arc, so it wouldn’t fit the flow of the story. I assume it’s something that would happen eventually, off-screen.

About the "male" thing, the whole question is what the original text said ? Or does it have the same connotation in japanese and in english
