If the entirety of this plot ends up reducing down to "Kyou wanted Uruma to kill him," I'm going to invent time travel to slap myself for picking up this manga

I genuinely laughed at the "I can't feel pain" line cause it weirdly felt built up just for an obvious reveal. Even the protag was like "are you hiding something from me" as if part of me was expecting some sci Fi bs explanation of why this dude is grinning after every punch and that eye pull. I should say too all of it was hard to take in cause half the time I'm thinking how's the protag not dead yet from the poison? :dogkek:
I was kinda hoping that he was still on the VR as him taking his eye was stupidly cringe, he doesn't feel pain, why would the eye there would disrupt him.
Can't feel pain lmao might as well have shot him then man just wanted the pleasure of dragging this out. Kyou the real writer
for sure, he doesn't feel pain, that's why he doesn't cringe at his writing, now it all makes sense D:

Are you talking about "To My Dearest Self With Malice Aforethought"?

It all makes sense now. Kyou isn't cruel—he's curious—he's ENTHRALLED!
He is trapped on the edge, fascinated by the one aspect of human experience he cannot touch—pain.
His laughter, his joy—they spring not from his malice, but from absence within.
He can't understand suffering, not in body nor in mind.
Every squirm, every plea, every twitch, every bleed, every cry, every need, every lie, and every dream
The most confounding and humorous thing!
All of it are riddles he'll never solve!
Yet, his victims continue to ask "why?"

For you see, a question with no answer is a joke.

The defining element of LIFE—the capacity to feel—is void within him.
Therefore, Kyou cannot live. Kyou is already dead.
He indulges himself in the concept that is most beautiful to him: dying, DEATH... Kyou indulges his very self.

And then the mirror flips. The author is Kyou. We are Uruma.
The one numbed by deadlines and profits... writes suffering.
The ones who can still feel—still wait on the chapters—read it.
Every chapter, every panel, every page, every bubble, every drawing
we come back and ask "Why are we still here... just to suffer?"
Still hoping for resolution. Only for the author to continue the same madness.

This is the most purest cycle: a void trying to feel.
And those who stick their heads in to scream.

This is the MOST BEAUTIFUL EDGINESS I HAVE EVER WITNESSED! MY EYES ARE COMPLETE!

The whole Congenital Insensitivity to Pain thing is such a stupid conclusion to this whole ordeal. It would have made more sense (and been more in character with Kyou's "Human Experiment A" schtick) to have Kyou smiling while getting his ass kicked because he had effectively succeeded into turning Shun into a monster.

It also makes Shun's insistence on making Kyou "suffer" all the more ironic because that burning desire to cause pain is exactly what Kyou wanted to instill into Shun from the very beginning. Lest we forget one of the earlier ass pull explanations for Kyou's motivations where he had Shun bullied to see if he could turn someone into a murderer while not being a murderer themselves (or some stupid bullshit along those lines). Even without the turbo death shot, even without the "inability to feel pain", Kyou had already won just by virtue of Shun not simply killing Kyou at every opportunity and being done with it. He's effectively indoctrinated Shun into the Revolutionary Club and at this point Shun is performing the very same "experiments" that Kyou had his followers do to people. Kyou dying would be a pyrrhic victory since his legacy would live on through Shun and that behavioral imprint he left on him.

Of course that would require the author to have any idea what he was talking about instead of just making shit up on the fly. It would also require them to be consistent and remember characterizations and plot threads they had set up previously which we all know is impossible given how many retcons and asspulls they've already partaken in.

If Kyou can't feel pain, what is the best way Uruma can make him suffer?

  • Kyou can't feel pain, so a beat down doesn't work.
  • There's no one he holds dear in his heart (besides Uruma who hates him) so you can't attack his loved ones.
  • He has psychopathic traits (lacking empathy, remorse, lacking remorse, is sadistic, manipulative) so he doesn't "feel" things like regular persons do.

Shigoku Kyou has already resigned himself to die by Uruma Shun's hand but the one-sided beat down is not gratifying for Uruma.

What's next for our MC? Time is running out.

Will he settle for just killing Kyou even though he isn't suffering? That may not be enough...

I just have to wonder how exactly this is going to end. Like we’ve set up that Kyou can’t feel pain, and thus anything Uruma does to him has no effect, so is it going to just end with Uruma killing him and then… nothing? No satisfying pay off, just an anticlimactic ending where nothing gets redeemed?
