I think the thing is that his mother(or parents) pays for his apartment since he doens't work, so since she would also pay for college things wouldn't be good monetarily.
So: 1-Go back home and college, or; 2-Work and keep the apartment.
But we see in a lot of manga people doing both, working and going to college so to me this drama is quite dumb(But i guess then they would not have their love-dovey time together lol). And also, there's Akutsu, she could do work while Ooyama studies
