Fully deserved that cold death, but I personally think it should have been worse. The family took you in when you, by all legality, had no rights or anything. Could have just been a mistress' son that was left as an orphan somewhere, but the real wife of the Count took him in and treated him as her own children. This alone should have been enough to be satisfied with living as part of the Count's family, even if you're not eligible for succession. The fact that he desired the position so much that he'd orchestrate the Count's and the first son's death means he was a despicable piece of shit to begin with and never deserved the kindness that was given to him all this time. Honestly, they should have disarmed him and arrested him. Afterwards, they should have had him publicly punished in front of the entire city and then executed as a means to completely denounce what was done and to also strip him of any dignity and honor he ever had before he dies a dog's death.

This whole arc feels kinda stupid from the start. All because he was told he wasn't the main house member too. Wouldn't it be better to work together and make the family name more prestigious by adding strong unity despite the difference of stalk?

TBH that plan is very Stupid and very poorly thought, if it's an old sword and has been used even so slightly, it will still show it's age even if it has been maintained during the years... specially in a medieval setting. So if you bring a brand new sword without imperfections to compare against an old sword, one will notice right away which one is the fake one....
it's a magic world with dwarves, elves, and beastmen. The Hobbit and LotR had multiple master-crafted swords rotting in caves that were still sharp as the day they were forged. An heirloom sword that's magically durable and sharp is a classic fantasy trope so it tracks that these people would expect a sword granted by the king would be a little special. Christ, you HEMA and smithing larpers are cringe.

As a person who actually does HEMA, I agree these bozos that push "realism" onto fantasy and fiction are damn annoying.

Medieval fantasy setting. if there is such as magic and stuff the sword would still look new the old one.
