It's not even that, I think this fog hides itself until it can take a body, then if it can control itself it can grow more powerful. Also, I'm not sure exactly how long elves live in this world. I'm pretty sure it is like a couple hundred years or so, but like LotR elves, or D&D elves, that can live for like 800+ years or more. No, you are right, it was this cave, but the monster was different last time, so it is like the fog formed another race for them to fight.
