The traditional Japanese model has the wife control the family finances. She gives the husband some spending money so that he can buy a couple of beers when he goes to the obligatory after-work izakaya meetings with colleagues. I've seen a few stories of a Japanese woman marrying a Western man, and then when the wife attempted that model, the Western man obviously said: "lol, no." Japanese kids mostly used to grow up under that model, though, so they don't question it that much.
