I'm not mad that they are friends or that it happened but wasn't that what he was? Like he clearly liked cool girl but decided to give up on her , so it's not like people were wrong to be annoyed

I get the impression he was more catching feelings for her but knew he was at the starting line while Tomo and Ibuki were already hurtling towards the finish line, so he took himself out of the race before it really started. Also he really valued the friendship he had formed with them both and didn't want a repeat of his past trauma.

Which is how anyone in such a situation should handle it (totally not me giving practically every other manga third wheeler the side eye right now).
