Woah, that tornado magic was like a blender. I can't imagine that was an efficient way of using the magic. I understand why he's used it instead of engaging in close combat even though he can literally blast off a wolf's head with his hand through magic enhancement; it's one thing to do a surprise attack from a blind spot, it's another to fight in close combat while outnumbered.

From the previous chapters, I wouldn't have assumed that Turner was a girl. In this chapter, the depiction of Turner looked a bit feminine on page 2 so I guess they were already trying to hint at Turner's gender then and the reveal was less of a surprise for me.
Honestly, I thought Turner was a boy at first, but after this chapter, I looked back at previous chapters closely and realized how feminine Turner actually looked. Though you never know with mangas nowadays.

I wonder if she was using "boku" in chapter 2. That might also be part of the misunderstanding.
She did not use any form of "I" in the few sentences she utter. Specifically in the panel where she said she found him she said "Ren mitsuketa souda ga. " (Found you ) . She basically omit the mention of first person. This is similar to english where sometimes "I" can be omitted but still understood.

In japanese usually they use the gender neutral third person pronoun so no one can know that he think she is a boy nor can he determine by others' words.

Oh dang, she really just never used it. No wonder he's shocked

So if they're children the same age who play together in a small village all the time, how could he not have realized by now?...
I could only come up with a couple of conjectures:

1. Tanya (Turner) and her family could be recent newcomers in the village. I'm presuming it that way because of her taciturn manners as her introductory characteristic from the start.

2. Not long after Tanya's family moved in, Ren got "possessed" by the middle-aged salaryman with cheat skills. So even if should we say the salaryman have access to original Ren's memories, he doesn't have much idea as to who Turner really is.

Because he actively tries to avoid playing with them and thinks it of as chore.
Plus, she usually wears boys clothes, and is part of indoor play group.

I knew turner was a girl 5 pages before the reveal lmao. I wonder if that was always the plan with her?

Real subtle, I'm sure no one will suspect a thing after seeing a random tornado appear out of nowhere and disappear just as suddenly.
