Damn he really gouged out his eye so he could take the kid. Respect to him.
This story seems super interesting so I’m excited to see how this goes on even if it contradicts with irl knowledge cause im 90% sure that Fermat’s Theorem was solved in 1993 lmao

Considering the face of that commander I'm not too sure this is the same timeline as ours...

Initially, I couldn't remember why this title showed up. Since it was a chapter 1 release, I figured it was something I saw posted on Japanese Twitter/X and just tagged it here, just in case someone picked it up. I need to reread the chapter, but man, I'm glad the series got picked up.

I like his views on comparing facts to discrimination but shooting the eye though? Hardcore.

I wonder how me, a mathlet, will do reading this manga.

He pulled it out with his hand, hardcore as fuck.
Wow I thought he shot and that was the last bullet, but for some reason I ignored the top left of the spread. Sheesh

I wonder if we're supposed to read this with the dramatic irony of knowing that it was Andrew Wiles that solved it.

Well there is a connection here! The modularity theorem (formerly known as the Taniyama-Shimura conjecture) was first conjectured by two Japanese men in 1957, and Wiles' 1994 proof of it for semistable elliptic curves had Fermats Last Theory as a corollary.

I have no reason to believe Fermat's Last Theorem was chosen for any reason other than the fact that it has a special place in popular culture. There are any number of unsolved problems in mathematics that could have worked. I highly doubt the author was cognizant of the connection, though it is pretty neat.

As an aside, this whole chapter was utter bs, the most common eye color in the US is, and always has been brown. If you shoot yourself point blank in the eye with a gun, the bullet will travel through the ocular matter, into the brain, and you will be dead before you hear the gunshot. It's true that while most Americans during WWII saw themselves as fighting against great individual evils when it came to the European fascist powers, they perceived the Japanese as an indiscriminate horde of sub-human vermin. However, anti-Japanese sentiment would never have been escaped by being born with blue eyes (which is near impossible because of genetics anyway), and what the f*ck is up with the vampiric pedoph*le. (The kids are drawn without clothes on page 40, you ain't convincing me that racist mf is adopting them out of the goodness of his heart.) And of course it's a perfectly normal characterization because, yes, all American officers are crazies who like to wager their lives on bets. If this isn't set in an alternate worldline, I'ma gonna... be sad I guess. Not much else to do. This whole chapter was mostly ragebait to be honest.

the thing is, this also is kinda reminding me of the VERY related abc conjecture for which a proof was created by Mochizuki, in which a fatal flaw was later found (and now Mochizuki is very hostile towards everybody who doesn't believe him, so very few people do).

Correct me if I'm wrong about any of this, diophantine analysis and IUTT is absolutely not my strong suit! :^]

To be frank with you, I was kinda in a frenzy because of the ragebait in the chapter when I wrote that response to you. Thinking about it more seriously, it would make sense for the author to have some mathematical background, or at least to have done a fair amount of research. It's not implausible that there's some historical basis to the story. I don't really have any mathematical background beyond calculus, and I'm not informed on the history of mathematics/current mathematical beef disputes. So, between the two of us, you're the expert.

First of all politics and Whatnot I don't like it in Manga, Yes Japan holds the blame for the war and America responds to that was not legal camps and racism still exists today on both sides so I'm not sure what to say about this.
I'll just try to ignore the politics and read it for the plot.
