I see the logic. If things go to shit and they reaize their death is inevitable, he doesn't want the pain of watching the person he loves romantically die. Of course, that presupposes that not accepting his own feelings will actually make dealing with her death easier. It would not. It would make it more difficult. But I'll cut it some slack, sometimes people logic themselves into illogical holes like these.

Uhm grooming is not ok, I've a very difficult time separating the creepiness of a parental figure trying to get romantically involved with the kid they adopted (no the nun being quirky and seemingly innocent doesn't make it alright) and the slice of life mystery story being set up (eg- what does she mean by her body not being needed to serve god, especially when viewed in the context of the outside world). I can only question the author's intents with this setup. Definitely not for me.
