I mean, this is nice and all, but what exactly is the point of introducing "rivals" (there aren't enough quotes for this) in a story where the main pair is not only extremely well delineated, but also dating, and in love, and the MC isn't even a pervert that oogles other girls?

Yeah, sure, most if not all mangas of this sort have characters that were created to be losers, but this just seems meandering, like the author has absolutely no idea what to do, and is just stalling until a new character clicks.

Really sad to see this series headed this way.

The series HAS been this way for a hot minute now, not "headed this way". An established pair and some side characters/a love rival/nuisance that gets introduced- nothing unheard of. But this manga has no direction and the main character has to change every 3 chapters to pander to the next girl to then 1 chapter later be "uwu romantic moment with only Kanan, trust!!!"

There is TONS of ways this could've gone. Some joke chapters, some about the demons with a more serious approach etc. etc. but we got "a girl that mingles, girl realizes her love for him in front of everyone and just NEEDS to be pushed towards him by those around!!, new girl introduced" one after another.
