To kids who are still in high school, everything that happens in high school is a big deal. That's basically their whole life.

Especially in Japan, since (from what I understand) their culture weighs failure more heavily than most others, in all aspects of life.

Well, not coming to school is a bit much but I can understand... I remember misusing my authority as the head of the RnD club to get the keys to the club room citing a project and just sleep there with a couple of my mates until the days pass

Like someone already replied to you, for many kids in High School every day felt like the most intense thing ever, sometimes there is a whole year of drama crammed into the 5 days of a week or at least if feels like that, I clearly remember times like that when I was in HS a long time ago.

Then there is the particular thing about this story, all of the main characters (whose names I barely remember) have some extra pressure surrounding sports, the MC burned out during a big game some time in the past, the other guy feels pressure from being in the basketball team, one of the girls also had a bit of a breakdown regarding basketball along with probably not enjoying being in the spotlight too much, and the other girl seems also have issues surrounding athletic activities.

I suspect the author wants to use the sport festival activities to highlight their issues so everything gets a bit amplified.
