Not a stunt. A pivot. She was basically forced to say that to save face after her fishing attempt came up a no go. God damnit, man up MC.

Human interactions are one of the best I admit, but it does not justify all this. We are here to read fiction, with some cliches and stuff. It's interesting I give it that, but MC is still not "real" as even most dull and dense boy would see the moves on him from Ayaka in the future. He wants to save status quo but it's leading no where, they'll drift appart in the future especially when he got the gf and started cheat on her.

See, the problem with this type of "unusual" relationship they have is that it will have to be toned down once one of them starts dating someone else. No more flirtatious undertones in their behavior around each other or trips to onsens with only just the two of them, even if they're only "friends." We don't really know what Ayaka and MCs relationship was like while MC was dating Reina, but since Ayaka was suspecting that she was the cause of the breakup it seems likely it was exactly how they are now. MC is so hyperfocused on preserving their current relationship that he didn't stop to think about how that'll only happen if both of them remain single. If he truly wanted to preserve it, he would return her advances and start dating. There's not much of a difference between their current relationship and dating anyway, besides being able to assign a label to it and the physical contact aspect.

Why is it MC who should man up? Why can't it be her who woman up?

MC sticked with her because she wanted a friend. He got to know her when she was fed up with others forcing romance on her.
If she wants their relationship to change, it should be on her first to establish that she's fine going more than friends. And she needs to be explicit, not doing things through hints or tests.

Us readers can see that she probably likes him romantically. But from MC's pov, it's not hard to see her "advance" as a genuine friendship test. It's fair for him to worry that their friendship is going to end.

I mean the reason she wasn't explicit about her feelings is also because she doesn't want to destroy their friendship, right? But it's not fair to put that burden on MC. She was the one who first set their relationship as friendship, so she should be the one who takes a risk.

Ayaka you should not ever think that you are at fault for Reina's cheating because it is okay for a guy and a girl to be best friends & have a platonic relationship. Any person that thinks otherwise means they have trust issues or they're insecure. Too bad he didn't go for it like I expected but they deserve each other regardless. I can tell you now that if you're reading this to get your rocks off, you're reading the wrong stuff. I read a lot of the LN and even had to machine translate it. This should have the psychological tag. The portrayal of the characters here are very realistic, a lot more than most romance mangas I've ever read.

just copy the japanese version of the title from the front page of this manga, then google search it. first entry should be kakuyomu, then translate the site to english. translation is now surprisingly well done compared to a year ago. AI really has come a long way.

I forgot about something. ncode.syosetu site goes way further into the story, including the reveal of what really happened from Reina's side. do the same but look for ncode.syosetu site result. you may need to check page 2 of search results.
