Feels like this is the first time a chapter's shown they have an adult relationship, Takagi being naked around Nishikata comfortably.

Some of the chapters make me wonder how they managed to have sex, or if they somehow magic'd up a baby.

It is an apartment. Teacher's salary is low especially for a young phys ED teacher likes him and Takagi is a stay-at-home mom. I don't think they have a lot of money. Unlike in the US, tuition fee in Japan from kindergarten to college is really high so Japanese usually have to plan carefully before having kids. Chii is still really young anyway.

The real reason is more likely that he's the only one working, hasn't been for all that long (probably been a teacher what, 2-3 years?) and they still live in a small apartment in a country with oft-excessive housing costs.

@SHTJ That doesn't relate to why they only have one kid at all. In this modern day, people prefer to have one kid than having multiple kids since it is costly to raise a child. Most of my acquaintances only have one child or they are an only-child themselves. A lot of people live child-free too.
