I feel like if this had been any other manga, one of two things would've happened: Either Masamune is actually in love with Subaru and becomes a rival character who tries to win him over and eventually loses and respectfully surrenders to the female lead, OR it's all just a misunderstanding and he wasn't actually interested in him at all, and Kasane realizing that is played off as a joke. I think it's pretty unique to have a situation where he is indeed in love with Subaru, but he realizes from the start that Subaru doesn't see him that way (or swings that way for that matter), and it just never crossed his mind to try to force the issue or get between them, and not only that but he deftly empathizes with Kasane's feelings and goes out of his way to make sure she doesn't feel uncomfortable with their relationship. That is pretty impressive writing.
