I was told by someone in the comments section that the story is supposed to be told in 3 parts.

Part 1. THe MC's viewpoint: It is set in the present. It's about the MC's crush and him drawing closer to FMC.
Part 2. The MC's ex / FMC's friend's viewpoint: It is set in the past. It's about the ex and how she met the MC, their relationship and her feelings during the relationship.
Part 3. FMC's viewpoint; IDK anything about this, we have yet to reach it.

We are currently in Part 2.
Many readers are not aware of the structure the Author has for the manga. Also, people don't like it because they feel that it's unnecessary drama in a SoL manga.
I was initially not a fan, but once I was made aware of the structure the Author had planned for the manga I slowly began to see the cleverness of it. I believe that the 2nd part isn't really all that bad. Personally, it's a clever piece of fiction.
