Well that's about to be a heartbreaking backstory that makes readers sympathize with him.

In the hand of most authors, readers would not sympathize with a villain whose tragic backstory so hastily developed, which is a testament to this writer's skill.

tbf, it's already kinda setup by the author that the dude isn't exactly a bad guy, he just had some sort of goal in mind that happen to have him work with the bad guy, which are obvious by now what he wants

Is? Where the hell do you live if it's still like that? All of that happened so many generations ago that you probably can't even trace your family line that far back. Of course still today there are crooked church employees, but that's only natural since they are humans as well. You can take any random people of any profession and background from the streets and statistically a certain portion of them will be criminal. In fact this very site of Mangadex is based on copyright infringement, which is criminal, so all of us are happy crooks as well.
