holy shit, an update!
and holy shit, that was so messed up
and holy shit, that was so messed up
There has to be more going on though. It doesn't make sense why Mutsu never tried brainwashing Mirai like how Yoshie. Why would she only educate Nana but not Mirai when we know from Yoshie that it's common for the womb-sama to be "educated" as well. It's likely that Mutus had second thoughts about the whole ritual but likely still followed them because that's the family tradition. It might have to do with the extended family/branch families since Mutsu's parents are likely alive during Mirai's upbringing. Maybe she was trying to figure out a way to break the curse without continuing it with Mirai as the womb-sama. I think she was cold towards Mirai so that she would never discover the family tradition and cut her off from the Ebisumori family entirely.@Faldo
Nah... not at all. That completely contradicts everything.
Her cold behavior. Continuing the tradition by educating Nana/etc. The rest of the family not stopping either. No signs whatsoever that Mutsu was doing anything to break the cycle, let alone her family.
There's also the foreshadowing from Yoshie that if the tradition is broken, spirits will be let loose somehow.
If Mirai would've been skipped as the next womb-sama, who would the family have replace her?
The Womb-sama must be of Ebisumori bloodline from their ancestor the diety.
The womb-sama must first hold the growth of the diety for it to then transfer to the new host to become the incarnate of the diety, the eldest daughter.
They hold a system, sorta for purity but mostly for ease of efficiency.
Sure, a cousin may be the womb-sama instead or whatever, but we've had no signs of that all.
... Maybe Mutsu isn't as cold as she seems, but I highly doubt she was actually planning in secret for Mirai to not be the next, and for another instead, who knows who. Meanwhile, being so cold? No. I completely disagree.
She definitely didn't give her second daughter a very traditional upbringing so your theory certainly makes some sense. I believe it to be open for interpretation.I've been processing this chapter for a few days but I just realised, if kaya's grandma wasn't willing to teach Mirai to be a "womb-sama" or indoctrinate her, as her aunt was and as she had zero clue what about what was written in that book, doesn't that mean she cared about kaya's mum a lot more than she thought?
Sitting here horrified and mystified, BC on one hand I had originally thought the grandma was an active participant in the atrocities of their family line but...why would she have not taught the "spare" kid better if part of their family acting like a cult, is to indoctrinate all non priestess family members into being a cog in the machine?
Is it possible she allowed her sister to be a womb-sama BC it was too late to dissuade her from thinking that's her only purpose in life?
...like. did she...did she do that knowing it would unravel the family and knowing as well that her priestess daughter wasn't steeled enough (emotionally and power wise) to perpetuate their awful traditions herself...
🥲I might be overthinking tho
