It's more that there was never a shot of him actually holding the baton, and the handoff is pretty fuzzy. Given that there are plenty of panels that could show him holding onto it (5-6 panels across three pages could have shown or are otherwise blocking his left hand), a reasonable reading is that the lack of baton is a subtle way of telling the audience the boy done goofed.
