It's also function the same as the English one.. that's why they also confused what kind of love they meant.. but they also have different word for different stage of romantic love.. If you want to have girlfriend use the word "like" or "tsuki or tsuki deshita" but if you want to have a wife use "love" or "aishiteru/aishitemasu"...
