You know, I don't remember much else about it, but I read something a while back where the main(?) character had a thing where they would, like, bite themself or something whenever they were hurt, because the pain of being bitten distracted them from the pain of whatever else had happened to them.

Might be something to it, apparently self harmers like cutters get a flood of pain killing endorphins and other hormones but what's weird is that it numbs their emotional pain too.
