Nah, the horse in this manga has more plot armor than Qin generals, we see what happen in Kanki case. the guys look like a porcupine and his horse is unharmed (Chap 753) . And rarely any scene in this manga depict large amount of death horses !

Ousen goes through every single tactical outcome in his head. That's his whole shtick. He's on par with Riboku in that degree. So, even with Shin and Karyo Ten falling for Riboku's plan and getting the Qin army into this mess, he still knew there was a path to victory. This might have been the worst case scenario but he knew Akou would show up in time. It's been stated and shown that he never fights a battle he can't win. The fact that he never once humored a retreat was because he knew victory is still possible. He would have dipped way sooner if it wasn't the case.

They were originally trying to hit Shibashou from behind, but they probably changed course and took a shortcut through the Qin army on the sides of the battle to get in front of Shibashou before he made it through Ousen's guards.

The only one who smart enough to target the horse is Shin's horse at Sai. Sure it dies not long after, but chad horse forced Houken dismount and battle on foot
