By insisting on dressing like a 90s movie character, Mitsuki may as well have a 1m spiked mohawk and a face tattoo of the anarchy symbol.
Butch AND alternative.

...but jeebus kreebus she's dressed like such a caricature that it makes me cringe.

She's dressed like a band at a photo shoot or a music video set in 1996. Like the cool kid in the 90s movie that's aged like fish.

OASIS?!
Okay, we get that you're so much cooler than all of us. That aside, this manga is designed to be accessible to people and get them interested. So it references well-liked songs that people can actually find.

If I'm talking about anime to people who don't know much about it, I'll mention reasonably well-known shows (that I still like, so I'm not going to bring up shounen slop); maybe something like Madoka or Steins;Gate depending on their taste. I'm not going to talk about Kokoro Library or Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou out of nowhere because they'll never come across it, even if it's a deep cut I particularly enjoy.

It doesn't mean I'm basic, it means I have at least a little bit of awareness of the audience.

Oh my god, fucking wonder wall. We truly get to see the mangaka's vast and yet sometimes basic ass taste in western music, akin to weebs listening to anime ops and eds only lmfao
Was lowkey hoping the next update after the break from the last chapter was going to be another volume extra with another playlist full of rock anthems like "Uptown Funk"

Honestly, this is all her own fault and she's being a pretentious twat over it. She compromised on her ideals, let herself become a doormat, threw away her passion and now makes the person she loves walk on eggshells around her? Pathetic.

She should get some resolve and become a one person act. There's literally a ton of good artists who do everything from writing and playing through to production and releasing all by themselves.

At the least she should get over herself and go to a gig to get the negative energy out.

Mate, other mangaka also do anything you said there; but their works are 2 to 3 times longer than hers monthly.
And they usually only take a month of chapter-release break because of the new tankobon release.
Also, we got nothing in this chapter after three months in real world time. Just, "Oh, she lost her music." and no explanation wharsoever or make her concert goes longer to play our feelings with every monologue Mitsuki/Aya could have. Just straight out that happens and then time skip.
M8 other mangaka have other mangaka to take on some of the load. Yet from what I understand, Sumiko’s been responsible for drawing on her own since she started. Idk if that is still completely the case, but the point is she’s just one person doing pretty much all the work alone. This isn’t a Shonen Jump production, this is an indie web manga. If you feel you can do better then make your own manga.

Umm, I just said that she's dressed like a cartoon character, and puts the lamest music on the same level as great music, because it's Western and 90s.

I didn't say I was cool. I didn't say you weren't.
Insecure much?

I didn't even know you were a teenager until you commented this.

I don't know why you felt the need to tell on yourself, here...
That aside, this manga is designed to be accessible to people and get them interested. So it references well-liked songs that people can actually find.
The author curates this stuff because they think it's cool.
I imagine people that dress like cartoon characters in Japan think it's all cool, too.

Lots of people in these comments think it's cool.

Meanwhile, Wonderwall has been a joke since it was topping the charts.
Because MAYBEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEH it's just a bit annoying.

If they don't know much about anime, why not talk about stuff you like instead of lowest common denominator?

Slayers rules. If it were streaming, I'd recommend it in a second. If the person I'm talking to is a mature individual, I might bring up Freiren. A kid? Welcome to Demon School Iruma-kun.
Stuff I LIKE. Not just... stuff.
I'm not going to talk about Kokoro Library or Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou out of nowhere because they'll never come across it, even if it's a deep cut I particularly enjoy.
They could look it up on the magical digital rectangle in their pocket.
The idea that "they're not ready for the stuff I actually like" is the most pretentious hipster nonsense I have heard since 2003.
It doesn't mean I'm basic, it means I have at least a little bit of awareness of the audience.
Ummm, no one said you were basic until you did.

I don't know what the problem with being basic is, anyway.

"I'm just a person. Living my life. Guess I'll put on 80s pop music and play Dark Souls, then read some Stephen King." -Literally Me

Want some well-known Western music that is good? Zep.
B.O.C.
.38 Special.
Alice Cooper.
Duran Duran.
Maiden.
Metallica.
AFI.

But those aren't 90s and "Alternative" enough.

It would cause her flannels to burst into flames, and turn her Docs into Nikes.

I think that's the opposite of pretentious.
Selling out is pretty far from pretense of superiority.
She should get some resolve and become a one person act.
She released an album.

Yeah, she did.

Harusono Shou is totally solo. Did a chapter a month for a long time, added more and more work, burned out, releases much more slowly, now.
Story is slower, too.

Well I for one am kind of glad that we stepped away from Mitsuki’s music arc for a bit. Hopefully we can finally start exploring some of these other plot lines like Joe/Kana, Shu-Chan and the lives and relationship of the girls in general.

I think we all knew that band wasn’t gonna work out anyway 🤷🏻‍♀️

What? We're in the middle of an arc about Mitsuki being up her own tuchus thinking she's better than her band, and embarrassed that her band isn't cool enough for her girlfriend.

The girlfriend that doesn't trust her, and Mitsuki doesn't talk to.

The next arc should be about their breakup.

Guys stop questioning Japans taste in Western Music
But since everyone is talking about Wonder Wall I gotta put my two cents, I love the wonderwall x boulevard of broken dreams mashup up look it up. Plot wise man like I said 3 months ago (last chapter) I don't mind drama but man does it take forever to update and all we get is 3-4 pages and this time I get blue balled by the twins . Cool to see them but why did Mitsuki stop playing tho :nyoron:

She released an album.

Yeah, she did.
You're right, I should have used self-absorbed.

She did for a single song right? I meant as a one person band releasing albums. Like Kauan, Sunsetter or (lord forbid) that frog fucker Phyllomedusa with his 200 odd grindcore albums.

Either way, her half assed pity party rubs me the wrong way. It's detestable.

It was a full album.

And the terms you are looking for is "solo artist" and "multi-instrumentalist".

They've both developed into insufferable twats.

I don't care about anyone's taste in music.

I have music I think is objectively mediocre-at-best, but love. I have too much of a headache to list it all, but there are two Starship songs I like. STARSHIP! Complete sellout commercial trash.
I'm a sucker for easy listening garbage from the late 80s. It all sounds the same, and I love it.

The thing is, Wonderwall is LAME. It's not COOL. It was never cool.
It was popular, but you know where I heard it the most when it was new? The shoe store I worked at, Target, bad movies, grocery stores...

I can't think of anyone who was even close to cool who didn't roll their eyes at Oasis.
Pretentious cunts aren't cool, and don't generally make cool things.

So many people (worldwide) these days see "90s" and think "cool".
I bet there are kids out there thinking Sugar Ray is cool. Hootie and the Blowfish.

Most music from any period isn't cool, or even good.

It's OK to like any or all of it.

ive been a guitar player for a long time, and there are always stretches (for me at least) where you cant seem to just reach over and pick the guitar up. often though, when it finally comes back to you there's a new enthusiasm and desire to get better that comes with it. i think that this sort of "rock bottom" period for her musically is what she needs to go to the next level with being a musician.

also in regards to their taste in western music, it makes sense. you can be as big of an enthusiast as you want in the music of another country on the other side of the planet but when you arent able to immerse yourself in the scene, see local shows, smaller regional bands on tour, or even do a lot of research online if you arent proficient in english. you just arent able to develop a super deep knowledge like that. i like a good number of japanese bands but i know my taste would look super pedestrian to a japanese rocker.
