I felt bad for finding it funny that she couldn't eat at the first party, poor Suu-chan.

How do the finances actually work for the maiko? Are they paying their living and tuition by working jobs like in this chapter? I'd assume the fee isn't that small if you want your dinner to have a geiko (or just a maiko) performing and pouring your beer. Of course the restaurant will take a good portion of it (food & drinks), but the professor is also paying someone for Sumire to be there. I'd assume Sumire doesn't see any of that money. Once she's a full geiko, I believe she will represent herself and work as an entrepreneur, pocketing everything her work produces, minus taxes.

@Kaarme
I'm not gonna pretend like I know the answer to this, but we do see them going shopping on their days off and buying things from convenience stores every now and then, so they must be getting spending money somehow.

@Kaarme Apart from living expenses and tuition, maiko are also using the manor’s kimono, and hairstyling too. The manor also handles bookings with the teahouses. So all that client money goes back to the manor and the teahouse.

The maiko get an allowance until they build up enough connections to pay back their debt and go independent (like suu-chan’s big sis). If more clients book them, they earn more money for the manor and pay it back that way.

Even as an independent geiko, I think they still have stuff to pay...idk. That’s what big sponsors are for.

Love the low key disrespect of kiyo’s cooking over 100+ chapters, always describing it as completely ordinary haha

@hanchobakery Back in the day, some much earlier chapter mentioned Kiyo getting pocket money, which seemed very wrong since she should be an employee. I'd say that indeed reflects the maiko getting such, but for some reason Kiyo was treated the same. I'd like to think it was just a minor error by the author.

@denzith So, even if Sumire is so popular (she's the go to maiko if somone else can't make it to an event), you'd say she's still in debt when her maiko period ends?

@Kaarme I’d say Suu-chan will probably pay it back faster than the other maiko that debuted the same time. After maiko is geiko, the debt still carries on. But if she stays in demand, sh can start making coin after a few years. For now she’s still only 16, she hasn’t even changed her hair yet unlike glasses sis.

Doubt the manga will go into this though, it’s fluffy slice of life. No pesky things like debt and salaries, just home cooked meals :p

@wooklee in japan, you already can work after middle school, do to shortage of workforce. high school is not mandatory. every decision taken by teenager them self trough survey they take since 2nd year of middle school. so it's not out of the wimp and rarely it was out of parent pressure. children them self chose to pursue higher education or immediately goes into workforce.
