Holy shit I somewhat called it. Didn't expect him to be working at a western style restaurant. Probably means we're gonna get some backstory and development on him. I don't know about most of you, but I'm excited to see some focus on Kenta simply because it's a shame to have Suu-chan's love interest to be a card-board cut-out.

It's great we get to see more of Kiyo's personality other than stoic zen master. She's a highschool-aged girl damn it she has to have some silly moments. Really happy to see both of the girls being cute.

On another note, compared to Suu and Kiyo, Kenta must be making some crazy amounts of cash if 1 MONTH worth of pay can cover 2k Yen. That or Suu-chan and Kiyo are being paid peanuts.

Ah, the topic about their salaries again.

Kiyo and Suu's salaries are probably similar considering how they're both technically working for the manor. Maybe Kiyo gets a little more? Who knows. They need to use their own money to buy snacks, skincare/cosmetics, and for any other things they need/want. The cleansing cream and sunscreen are purchased themselves for their own use, which can cut off half of that allowance already but it's not a monthly expenditure so it's not too bad. Kiyo seems to be in the habit of buying an ice cream or some other snack whenever she goes out at night for shopping so that can easily be 100-200yen everytime depending on what she buys. The other maiko seem to have enough money to go eat fancy stuff like anmitsu or steak donburi every now and then, so their allowance probably isn't too shabby? HOWEVER! They do receive tips from their clients, which they are allowed to keep for themselves and not surrender to the manor. Maybe Sumire is saving all this in the bank and just keeps pocket change on her.

So depending on all that and judging from the conversations that the characters have so far, I'd estimate that the maiko maybe get a monthly allowance of about 1500-2000 yen? This chapter might be taking place in the middle or nearing the end of the month so they don't have much spending money left.

Expensive? Excuse me?

1000 yen is 7,9 euros / 9,7 dollars, how do they not have that amount of money???

Seriously do they even get paid? Kiyo starts working every day early in the morning and finishes late at night, plus she does all the shopping and everything. How can she not afford to drop 1000 yen on a meal once in a while?

I don't really remember Kenta cooking before.

Edit: maybe he's not a cook but kitchen staff.

Thanks for the notes, translator team. Lmao cowboys

I just bet they didn't expect to be making that kind of purchase when visiting a friend and such didn't bring enough money for it. It's a small amount but it's not like you carry all of your money on you everyday

The thing about Kenta in the kitchen, maybe it's his way of staying close to kiyo or something that reminds him of her?? Or maybe as a way to get closer to kiyo

To answer the question, 1000yen is not that big of an amount but it is quite pricey for one plate of meal. Compare to 150-200yen rice balls and 500 yen bento meals from a convenience store. Usually meals priced 1000-2000 yen and above are more authentic than a typical chain restaurant food/fast food or it could be a set that includes side dishes like soup or dessert and a drink. So it's common to find a 1000yen meals but not for one omurice! (But it's the restaurant's signature dish so it's understandable)

And I think Kiyo & Sumire are not poor, they just didnt bring enough money in their wallets since 700-900 yen would usually be enough for a chill outing (especially considering they didnt plan to go shopping and the prices are likely a bit cheaper than in Tokyo. They also probably keep their other money at the manor/piggy bank) so they should've been fine... as long as they watch their outcome lol XD

@candypiggy Sumire aside, Kiyo shouldn't be lacking money. She's an employee. I doubt she's paid much, but on the other hand, her housing shouldn't be much either, and she no doubt gets food as a part of the job. Even if the mother only pays her something funny like 60,000 yen per month, after deducting the room, what exactly would Kiyo be using it for? She buys nothing but an occasional ice cream. She doesn't even travel back home. She ought to have good half a million saved up by now, after a year of working. And no, she wouldn't be keeping all that in a piggy bank, haha, but a real bank.
