I think the problem lies in how they salvage the situation. Instead of correcting their mistake, they try to "make it correct" their mistake and making stupid decisions in the process.

I remember reading the novel for this. It gets pretty ridiculous, but I still liked it.
It's basically these two idiots trying to do different schemes to screw over the MC, but the MC always wins while being completely oblivious (which is why at some point, people started hating the novel since the obliviousness gets too ridiculous, not a spoiler though since I don't remember what happens)
