on a more serious note, he's smart to be using reference so much and so often. studying shit directly, whether from life or compiled reference library material built up over time, and doing so regularly is what allows for those "high-skill artists" to appear to just pull images straight out of their head.
I'm sure some people just have that innate talent, likely joined with some sort of unusually-high recall ability to reproduce things they've seen to exacting detail (didactic memory, type stuff), but by-and-large it's all down to countless hours spent practicing and studying and doing that builds up the literal and metaphorical muscle memory to create a vast swath of poses, props, settings, objects, people, and perspectives & compositions with such fidelity and degree of polish.

which makes his character that much more interesting. He's not just some dude drawing ecchi stuff in his room at all hours of the day--it's clear he cares deeply about the craft and the quality, and it's nice to see that being focused on here, opening Umi's eyes to some of the stuff behind him and his profession that you'd otherwise miss because of "the perception" of the genre he works in.

back to silliness, her immediate desire to help by posing for him, coupled with his obvious reaction, was entirely expected given how the conversation was going.
But I still laughed. Umi be too pure, but at least Shoya knows where the line is and how to hold it.

I've always been thinking his manga can't possibly be that explicit. For him to have the renown to hold a handshake event, for an h mangaka that would be top of the industry. must be something to loveru level at most

There are two types of h-mangaka. The first type is the doujin-first originally self-published ones. These are usually reclusive and don't go out in public much if at all. They usually don't have stable output and still operate within their regular circles. The second are the industry mainstays. These are treated like normal mangaka with stable publishing jobs and regular fanbases. If you recall the Dexpocalypse (or know the related nhenpocalypse), you can sort of see the difference there. The ones that got purged out of these sites are the latter category. Seems like Shou is in this group.

The mainstays CAN be really hardcore and explicit. Oyster is one of the oldest and most prolific names in this category, after all.

oyster does meet events? But they're all pretty reclusive tbh. specially these days. to pull crowds for h manga you'd still have to be at the top of the industry. Publishers mostly set up those kinds of events as advertisements for their authors anyways.

She wants him to draw her like one of his french girs UwU waifus.

Every chapter has such wonderful Umi reactions.

And Kanakana is just going to have to accept she dug her own nickgrave.

What the puck Shoya-kun, crossdressing as a girl actually suits him way too well. He looks beauty :kek: Sayama in here is so innocent for volunteering to be his drawing model, and it looks like she’s actually into Shoya's sexy crossdressed poses. Too bad, it wasn't quite what she imagined. haha :lul:

OH, yeah, that's one of the funniest things about this industry. :ROFLMAO: There are two mangaka using the pen name Oyster: The hentai mangaka Oyster and the regular mangaka Öyster. The h-mangaka one is an industry mainstay and DOES do meet events. If you go to Akiba to either the pink or green shop (cultured boys and girls know what I'm talking about) they will occasionally have these events in the empty upper floor above the cosplay floor, but there have been meet events in the regular manga stores (like Gamers) too.

Well, the mangaka Öyster is the one who turns out to be a recluse, and as far as I know hasn't had any meet events. So this is a funny case of the h-mangaka being more mainstay and openly public than the mangaka sharing the same name.

Also, I just realized that you're probably imagining something like a book signing event for major authors. All mangaka in Japan who have a regular fanbase and have managed to release at least a volume usually get a meet event, although the scale varies. The h-mangaka events I described are tiny and usually you have to register via the store website and get one of the limited slots. It's closer in atmosphere to a minor idol handshake thing than a real event. The space tends to be tiny and limited, so you go in, get a signature or say something in at most 30 seconds, then rotate straight out of the building.
