not even gonna lie, this was a
huge letdown

im a die-hard horimiya fan and because of the fact that i dont use twitter often, i make it a point to check all of my favourite artists accounts when i do log on incase any new art dropped. usually i see daisuke hagiwara drop some cute or gorgeous horimiya bday art, i save it, and i move on. this time, however -- alongside the bday art, i noticed they had made like 20 diff posts about this new manga. at first, i didnt rlly care, thought it was cool daisuke hagiwara was working on her (
first?) completely original work, but i saw reddit threads discussing it and i ended up seeing a lot of discussion regarding ''age gap manga'' and that name alone is a red flag to me so i decided to check it out to see if it was a literal crime or not,,,
my disappointment is immeasurable, although im aware that HERO sensei wrote horimiya and not daisuke hagiwara, i really admired them as an artist and their artstyle is everything to me so its... weird seeing them write something like this and draw it in an artstyle i cherish so deeply.
i mean i tried to give them the benefit of the doubt a couple times but it js kept getting worse!! </3 like 5 pages in i hear something about a highschooler crushing on someone 8 years older and while that is natural as long as the person who is 8 years older doesnt reciprocate, i saw a very clear romance tag.. scary. kept reading just so i could draw a completely informed judgement, and then it delved into eroticism.. wow. i personally despise anything suggestive or a story based on something ero so i knew i wasnt going to like this immediately upon seeing the eromanga he was drawing as well as just how passionate he is about it (
hopefully theres some nuance to that, i would find it extremely boring if he preferred drawing eromanga over regular manga just cause n there was no other reason) but putting my own personal preferences aside (
cause while i wouldnt personally read something like that, i guess stories about eroticism are fine.. when there are only adults involved. this story couldve been completely fine with a college student as the main character & they couldve added some sort of broke college student element which would prompt her into moving in with her neighbours briefly), anyway i unfortunately kept reading once more.
it seemed more promising with time! a story about accepting change with open arms, and daisuke hagiwaras art has always been capturing, and the pacing seems nice.. and then you just get reminded that shes 16/17 again. why dude. why.
they make it pretty clear that shes way younger and hes way more mature as well, he reprimands himself for leaving around mature content around a minor, encourages her to make more friends at school, reprimands her for carelessly just strolling into a guys room in the middle of the night, constantly talks about missing his own youth, etc. he seems to be more a mentor to her, honestly, and so the romance tag is really pissing me off. i really tried to give it the benefit of the doubt at first like ''oh, perhaps with his encouragement, she falls in love with those new friends shes making at school in ch2'' because he also hasnt shown any romantic attraction for her yet -- like seriously, he only gets happy talking to her about manga and finds her cool but no romantic attraction whatsoever (
honestly hes protecting her more like a lil kid than engaging with her romantically) & i think thats a good thing but again, the romance tag,,, and the fact the story is called ''not quite love yet''....hah </3 but anyway, the fact that theyre the two main leads, theres art of them everywhere, and theyre together in the introduction page of ch2 and hes being called her ''
knight in shining armor'' i think its safe to say that ive given up on any normal hope for this girl and her now illegal lovelife. overall, i cant really say much cause we're only 2 chapters in & either way i likely wont be reading any more of this, but these are my two cents,, i kinda wish he functioned more as a mentor and this was a story about adapting to change and she fell in love with that classmate of hers who talked to her about that manga in ch2 or something but okay.. seriously they wouldve been a better couple considering she goes ''omg shes just a classmate!!'' when he brings her up but then she blushes at his smile two seconds later so once again my hopes are crushed. quite disappointing to see the beloved artist of horimiya choose to create this, like i feel tainted reading this with their beloved artstyle n overall style n allat,, i may be overreacting cus its not all bad but it was a really promising story at first and the element of an age gap kinda ruined it for me entirely & clearly for many others as well.
footnote: can we please stop dunking on horimiya n acknowledge that horimiya was written by HERO sensei while this is written by the ARTIST of horimiya!!! the age gap is not horimiya/hero senseis fault!!! i just ask you to place a little more care into this because even the TL says ''daisuke hagiwara, the
AUTHOR of horimiya presents this ...'' and this is COMPLETELY different from horimiya, like the contrast is actually stark
