I don’t think 「あいつ」needed a note.
It’s more “casual and familiar” than “gender neutral“. There’s no gendered equivalent.
「彼」and「彼女」weren’t used as pronouns until Western literature started being translated, even. See also: 「恋人」

“He” is accurate. This is English and Hiura IS A BOY after all.
Maybe someday English will use “they” or something else, despite the gender being known, but that ain’t how it be right now.

I think it’s important to note, occasionally, that Midou was an effeminate (in not feminine) little boy, and had struggled to fit his appearance, but encouragement from his future BF helped motivate him.
