The writing of this story feels... inconsistent.
Mentioning trans people offhand as the reason these two can't share the secret because to paraphrase: "the transes might start near-killing themselves to try and transition" is... a writing choice. Both for how the rules of this world are being set up by the author, and what the authorities within it are doing in response.
I think It'd be a little less jarring if there was any indication that the eggheads were researching this so as to activate, prevent or reverse this process without life-and-death stakes.
