That have a little to do on fact guy is an adult. In old manga recipe this kind of setting will drive him to go to seclusion and DO SOMETHING to fix his life while doing some self thinking on what mistakes he possibly did and how to avoid it from happen again.

Dude have a girl supporting him and push him to keep on living with her, care for him and cook for him, by accurate to real life, any decent man will want to fix himself and someday repay this kindness, if fate allows it.
