Let's also not forget he's something of a psychopath. People easily brush aside the fact he threatened to kill a man and girl child if they didn't hand over their meal. So yes, he is both an idiot and a douchebag being painted as a hero. Even though he's a horribly chuuni character in the not-fun way, but the legit edgy-as-fuck way. "Edgy tsundere hero" is already cliche and I was tired of it before it gained such status. At this point I'm reading to see how the power system develops.
Which you and Kaarme bring up a very good point: Despite the meager limiting factors already put in place by the story, there's SO much more he could be doing. No one had to die here except the enemies. There are four possible reactions to "oops my MC is too versatile, effective, and powerful".
1: Nerf hard. (Reduction in capability)
2: Just start bullshitting up more restrictions on their power.
3: Everyone is this strong. The enemies are even stronger still. MC just looked good because back then everyone was weak in comparison - I bet the baker's wife could kick his ass now.
4: Turn the character into an inexplicable wallflower until the last moment for a 'cool' scene intervention.
In the latter case, the MC just lets the innocent die for no real reason in-character. But the author makes it happen to create what he thinks is (forced) drama. Instead, there was nothing tense or dramatic or sad about this. The bear loli is happily serving her new master and has a rival. Big smiles and bouncy happiness, not at all like you just lost everything in the world and need to slowly transition into the only new option.
